What is Homeopathy?

A word that has been misunderstood and mischaracterized, it might actually be easier to start what homeopathy isn’t. Once we get that straightened out, I think the answer to this question will be much clearer.

Homeopathy Isn’t The Umbrella Word For All Home Remedies
Although we recognize the word “home” in homeopathy it actually has nothing to do with it. Homeopathy isn’t the word for all varieties of home remedies, like vitamins, supplements, minerals, herbs and essential oils, garlic and caster oil packs. The word we are looking for here is Natural Medicines, sometime referred to as naturopathy. As a matter fact, the word homeopathy means; “Homo” = like, and “pathy” = disease. These remedies cure in sick people what they cause in healthy people (hang on for examples in a future posts). Our medicines are chosen based on a principle of “like cures like”, an idea going as far as back Hippocrates. Homeopathy actually stands alone between naturopathy and pharmaceuticals.
Homeopathy Isn’t “Homemade”
Our medicines are commonly referred to as “remedies” but that doesn't mean they are cooked up in someone's kitchen. Made from substances in the world around us like plants and minerals, they are produced in homeopathic pharmacies in a standardized way. If a bottle of homeopathic medicine has “HPUS” listed, it has been made in a facility that follows very particular guidelines in making each remedy, and the FDA helps us assure that what it says is in the bottle is actually in the bottle. HPUS stands for the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States, and it falls under the watchful eye of the FDA
Homeopathy Isn’t New-Age, Spiritual Or Esoteric Medicine
Homeopathy was discovered and developed into a system of medicine by a trained medical doctor (Samuel Hahnemann) in the 1700s in Germany. Up until the modern age, homeopathy was practiced by medical doctors and trained medical professionals only. Since the 1940s in the US, homeopathy has taken a back seat to modern medicines, but around the world, it is recognized alongside all other medicines as an effective medical treatment and remains part of many national healthcare systems. For us in the US, we have crunchy moms, passionate educators and naturally minded practitioners to thank for keeping it relevant and helping it to be rediscovered in a modern time with so.much.illness where having every option available to us is critical.

Homeopathy Isn’t Energy Medicine
Homeopaths don’t “lay hands” or manipulate energy fields. A homeopath sits with sick people and listens to and records their symptoms. This can take some time and patience, but at the end of a consultation the homeopath has a very clear idea of how their client experiences their disease. It’s been said that a homeopath will know more about you than you spouse and your doctor combined. Don’t let that scare you off - we use this information to help you.
Homeopathy Isn’t A Substitute For Medical Care
These days, most homeopaths are not medical doctors, nor are we trying to play the role of one (on TV or elsewhere). Modern medicine has many benefits and should be used when appropriate. Having a great doctor gives you the best that modern medicine offers, and having an awesome homeopath opens doors to which your doctor doesn’t always have the key. When it’s done with respect of each other’s expertise’s, they offer their patient/client the most effective option for healing. My doctor did the medical testing and diagnosing, and then supported me as I searched for alternatives to opioids for my fibromyalgia. Which is what got me here, in the world of practicing homeopathy.

Homeopathy Isn’t A Practice That Revolves Around Medical Diagnosis
Our entire system revolves around how you experience your symptoms. ADHD, depression, fibromyalgia, anxiety, constipation, chronic fatigue, arthritis, eczema, insomnia, GERD, acne, tics, asthma, PMS, injuries, ear infections, teething, menopause and most all illnesses are different for different people. The diagnosis is what defines the general category of the illness, but your symptoms and the nuances of them are what defines the actual flavor of what ails you. This flavor is what we match a remedy to that will lead you to better health.
Homeopathy Isn’t Invasive
Samuel Hahnemann stated in his teachings that “The highest ideal of cure is the rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health…” (O’Reilly, 1996, P. 6). He teaches us how to do this with simple homeopathic medicines, which melt on the tongue. What could be less invasive? With the proper remedy, people have been known to heal better than expected from illnesses and injuries and escape the need for surgery. That’s the opposite of invasive, right?
Homeopathy Isn’t Expensive

Compared to conventional medical care and pharmaceuticals, homeopathic treatment and remedies are affordable. If you are using them at home for a cold, flu or injury, you can pick up a remedy for $8-$10, and this will last you for years. If working with a homeopath to uproot a chronic illness, the fees are generally less than a doctor’s visit (without insurance) and can help avoid further medical expenses from the progression of the illness.
Hopefully, if you’ve been following along with what homeopathy isn’t, you're starting to see what homeopathy IS

A complete system of medicine that has survived the test of time (over 200 years); recognized by medical doctors around the world and even
by the FDA in the US. It is gentle, safe and effective for most people and most illnesses, any age or stage of life. It is inexpensive and most importantly, is the most HIGHLY PERSONALIZED system of medicine available.
So what is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is…
…for you
